Support your LGBTQ+ patients

Written and developed by queer and gender non-conforming healthcare practitioners, this course uses real-world experiences from trans and LGBTQ+ patients to develop a groundbreaking new online learning course for hands-on therapists.

Lack of understanding of LGBTQ+ bodies is hindering access to healthcare for this demographic, creating very real health concerns. The LGBTQ+ community have specific health needs and challenges that we as practitioners need to familiarise ourselves with, in order to support them effectively. Not only that, we need to be working to create inclusive and affirmative practices where our LGBTQ+ patients feel safe.

In this course, you'll learn the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions when caring for LGBTQ+ patients

  • Best practice recommendations for healthcare practitioners to meet their professional competencies in providing care to LGBTQ+ people

  • Develop an understanding of pathologies which may present in the LGBTQ+ population, their impact on clinical care and how this can impact a plan of management

  • Develop an understanding of trauma on the developing brain, how this impacts long-term health trajectories and its relationship to the biopsychosocial model of care

  • Understand how to elicit sensitive clinical information in the case history in an affirmative and empathetic way, including pregnancy and chestfeeding, screening for patient safety, and LGBTQ+ specific concerns

  • Understand the impact of LGBTQ+ specific gender-expression activities and their relationship to pain patterns, clinical presentations, and hands-on care

  • Understand the types, nature, and impact of hormone therapies and surgical interventions on the body, how these impact our considerations as clinicians, and key knowledge for practitioner safeguarding

  • Benefit from best practice guidelines for creating an inclusive and affirming practice including inclusive intake forms and the wider clinical environment

  • Understand the importance of communication and consent in the context of LGBTQ+ specific healthcare

  • and much more...!

I loved this course! It took me a while to decide I wanted to do it, but I was really enticed by the idea that there was information that I didn't know I didn't know (if that makes sense!) Turns out I was completely right- there is so much more to this topic than I thought. Before I started this course I was one of those people who thought that LGBTQ+ people didn't need specialist treatment and I didn't need specialist knoweldge to look after them. I'm so thankful to Oakley Coaching and Anna for writing this course- its so thorough and has made me feel much more confident in supporting the LGBTQ+ people I see in my practice. In addition, I have a range of practical steps I'm going to be taking over the coming weeks to make my practice more inclusive. 100% would recommend to all therapists and practitioners.

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I thought there wouldn't be much in this course I did not already know- how wrong I was- there is so much more to learn! There is so much valuable content in this course, providing a deep dive into the key aspects of inclusive healthcare, including some parts that I had not even considered previously. Thoughtfully written, powerful, well-referenced and engaging, I am seriously impressed and will be recommending this course to other clinical colleagues. Look forward to enrolling on other Oakley Coaching courses in the future.

As evidenced in the course, the only way to reduce health inequalities in LGBTQ+ people is by taking a long hard look at the situation. It's easy to turn a blind eye or refuse to accept that "not being non-inclusive" is different to being "actively inclusive", a term used throughout this course and for good reason. Not your usual online training, this course is engaging throughout and the information delivered in such a way as to encourage thought and insight. It also answers many of the all-too-important questions raised when considering providing hands-on care to LGBTQ+ people- somethign I have never seen covered in any other course. For example- What nerves are involved in what procedure, what should my intake forms look like, what are my legal responsibilities, what presentations might I see in my practice and what differentials should I be considering, what impact does X hormone have on the body, on their recovery, on their outcomes from care.... I could go on. I very much enjoyed this course and will be using it as a reference tool to keep coming back to as I refine my practice with the small, achievable steps outlined in the course and work to becoming a more 'actively inclusive' practitioner.

I decided to do this course after a situation in my clinic- I wish I had known this type of training existed before that had happened! So much to learn on this topic, but now I feel so much better informed and confident looking after LGBTQ+ people and know what I should and shouldn't be doing. This course is really in-depth but also easy to understand and apply in clinic. Such important training, I will be recommending this to all my friends and colleagues.
